Emergency Response Protocol

Priority response sequence for high-risk steel transport incidents.

Step 1 - IMMEDIATE STOP

Perform a controlled stop on the shoulder. Activate hazard lights and place reflective triangles according to FMCSA 392.22.

Step 2 - ASSESS SCENE

Check for injuries, inspect coil or billet position, and identify secondary risks such as fluid leaks or structural trailer damage.

Step 3 - CALL 112

Report a high-risk heavy load incident with exact location or mile marker, plus number and weight of coils and permit information.

Step 4 - AUTHORITIES

Await state police or transport authority, cooperate with diversion and investigation. If a coil is off trailer, request heavy wrecker or crane support.

Step 5 - DOCUMENT

Complete accident reporting per FMCSA 390.15, capture photos and video of load, straps, and road, and gather witness statements.

Step 6 - EXPERT RESPONSE

Dispatch backup driver or escort, call specialized recovery teams, run root cause analysis, and apply corrective actions including enhanced pre-trip checks and added tiedowns on downgrades.

Incident Simulation Example

During the Basauri-Amorebieta route, emergency braking caused an 18,000 kg coil to shift 15 cm. Response: visual inspection, re-lashing with ratchet straps plus 2 extra loop straps, and load transfer if stability is compromised.

Prevention Measures

  • Mandatory photo documentation of lashing before departure
  • Refresher training on EN 12195-1 for all drivers
  • Upgrade 5,000 daN straps to higher-capacity chains for heavy coils
